What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer installed in a vehicle, a gadget little bigger than a cell phone, to prevent it from starting if the driver has consumed alcohol above a pre-set limit. The device connects to the vehicle's ignition system and requires the driver to blow into a mouthpiece to measure their Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC). If the BrAC exceeds the programmed limit, the car will not start.
